吉氏色素是德国汉堡化学兼细菌学家(Gustav Giemsa，1867～1948)首先调制应用于生物染色剂之一。固体为暗红色或褐色粉末状，内主要含有二号天青(azureⅡ)和二号天青-曙红(azure Ⅱ-eosin)的混合物。应用时多溶于等量的甘油和甲醇中。当今市售已配好的暗红色吉氏溶液由天青B:二号天青-曙红:(碱性)亚甲蓝二1:12:2(质量比)组成，然后溶于甘油：甲醇=5:24(体积比)中，总浓度为0.6％(质量)，密度(20℃)0.89g/cm3。生物标本在其中染色时间约为45min。溶于水，溶于乙醇。熔点：300 °C
